My process of picture book making...

I start by getting all my ideas down on paper, little thumbnails work great!

    Then I refine my thumbnails,

After all the refining is done, an illustrator put together what is called a " picture book dummy". Since this is a family story, I had copies of it printed by Blurb. They did a great job.

In 2016 I started a Master's degree in counseling psychology and art therapy. For now I have had to suspend my art class, but I hope to restart them when life isn't quite so busy. I have enjoyed such great groups of kids, it has been really fun teaching these classes.

    art classes for kids

Learn To Draw are fun yet challenging art lessons taught in my home.

    school visits

If your after-school program or kindergarten class is in the Calgary area and looking for an 'artist in residence', I would love to come and talk to you class about being an artist/illustrator, talk about the process of making a picture book and do an art project with the children. Please contact me for pricing and availability.

  • About Me

Lisa Thompson is an Illustrator living in Western Canada who can be found land SUPing with her three boys on warm summer days or curled up with a warm cup of Egyptian Licorice tea and her sketchbook on cold wintery ones.

She has always loved to draw, and has fond memories of going to her dad's office as a little girl, where he would let her draw with a fresh pad of paper and a black felt tip pen. She still gets excited with the prospect of a new sketchbook or pencil. After a successful corporate career she returned to her passion for drawing and has begun illustrating for the children's market.
